Knights star Alex McKinnon breaks silence on horrific injury

Post by greeneyed » March 25, 2014, 9:43 pm

'We just have to hope for the best for him': Alex McKinnon's rugby league career over following sickening neck injury

The rugby league world was united in support for Alex McKinnon after confirmation the young Newcastle forward’s career had been ended by a spinal injury suffered in a tackle the NRL match review committee found too difficult to grade, referring it to a judiciary hearing.

A Knights statement on Tuesday night said McKinnon had movement in his right arm and had undergone emergency surgery to stabilise his neck, which involved the removal of a disc at C4 and C5 anterior fusion.

However, further scans after the operation confirmed what the Knights statement described as a ‘‘devastating spinal injury’’. ‘‘Alex remains in hospital in intensive care and may require further surgery to stabilise his spine,’’ the statement said. ‘‘He has movement in his right arm and the uncertainty remains in regeneration, with a variable prognosis. The doctors explained regeneration and recovery could be up to two years.’’

McLean stood down, devastated over injury

A devastated Jordan McLean has been stood down from Melbourne's match against Canterbury while he waits to front the NRL judiciary over the tackle that has left Newcastle forward Alex McKinnon with spinal damage.

McLean, who is receiving counselling from the Storm's welfare department, posted a message on Facebook saying: "Best wishes to Alex McKinnon, I genuinely hope your alright and have a safe recovery."

A Melbourne official said the rookie prop was "very, very upset" and there would have been doubts about his ability to play against the Bulldogs on Saturday night.

Puts everything into perspective. Hope McKinnon's luck turns and he ends up with the best possible outcomes form here on in. It's a terrible, terrible event.

To tread lightly and return to the football side of it, I think it was just bad luck, having watched the replay 3 or 4 times. There was no malice or intent and I think McLean has been hung out to dry on this one.
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.

Look pretty horrible watching live. Even worse now we know the outcome.

I still don't think there was much in the tackle. They lifted him to put him on the ground and nothing would have occurred if McKinnon hadn't ducked his head. I really hope they don't come down hard on McLean because of the outcome rather than the action. I'm sure he's struggling enough with what has happened.

I think thats pretty normal with this type of thing. Its to keep him from moving while he heals post surgery iirc. Either way its not so much about his Rugby League career as ever walking again at this stage.

Exactly. Forget his career atm, just hope the guy can walk again and lead a fully functioning life in the not too distant future. It is very sad though.

I don't think anybody should be having a go at the NRL for making the game safer after incidents like this because this is the kind of stuff you don't want to see, ever.

Alex McKinnon is a great kid who’s more like my son, writes Newcastle coach Wayne Bennett

WAYNE BENNETT

I WANT to tell you about Alex McKinnon, one of the best kids you’ve never met.

Because the hardest thing right now is busting to do something for Alex and his family, and the realisation you can’t … this lonely feeling of helplessness.

So I thought the best I could do was share my insights to a wonderful young man, to our relationship and trust.

It all happened so quickly. And it was life-changing.

Today, Alex lies in a Melbourne hospital fighting the biggest battle of his 22 years.

First time I saw him was at an under-20s Dragons training session. The flaming red hair made him stand out, that and his athleticism.

Powerful words for Wayne Bennett. Nearly teared up reading this.

Yeah, that was a pretty amazing thing to read.

McKinnon wouldn't be on a large contract either, which makes it even more traumatic. I'm not sure how much insurance is involved in these circumstances but hopefully the club and NRL look after him either way.

Adam Ritson sued the Raiders after a John Lomax tackle ended his career. if the NRL judiciary find McLean guilty I imagine the same thing will happen.

I know this sounds harsh, but the truth is without him being hospitalised the tumor would never have been discovered. Harsh but true.
