Parramatta Eel Jarryd Hayne quits Kangaroos and is headed to America to trial for the NFL

DALLY M champion Jarryd Hayne is to quit the NRL and switch to NFL in the United States.

The Parramatta Eels superstar will withdraw from Australia’s Four Nations squad in a bombshell announcement to be confirmed later today.

His move is a major blow to the NRL following the loss of Sam Burgess and Sonny Bill Williams.

It is understood Parramatta was only informed of his decision last night.

Hayne Announces Move to US

Dear Blue and Gold Army,

For the past 24 months I’ve been thinking about having a crack in the NFL, and over the last 12 months I’ve been seriously considering it.

Today I can officially announce that I will be heading to the United States to pursue an opportunity to play American Football.

I will be withdrawing from the Kangaroos Four Nations side immediately, and accepting a conditional release from the Eels to make the move overseas.

The reason I didn’t make this decision any earlier was because of the part I played in getting Brad to the club and the way we finished the season. I felt I owed the Club one more year and I gave it everything I could.

It’s always been a dream of mine to play in the NFL, and at my age, this is my one and only chance at having a crack at playing there.

I’m excited about the potential opportunities that lie ahead. I’ve known the deadline has been looming for me to make this call, and I believe the right time is now.

I’m so passionate about the challenge that lies ahead for me, not only as an athlete but more so as a person. It’s the hardest decision I have ever had to make in my life. I’m leaving my teammates, friends, and most importantly my family; but for me to grow as an athlete and a person I feel this is the right step to take.

It hasn’t been an easy decision for me to leave the Eels, the club’s been my home and family since I was 13, and I’ve always been proud to pull on the Blue and Gold jersey with my teammates.

The hardest thing about leaving the club is there’s stability for the first time in a long time, but I know where my heart lies and I’m following that.

I’m always telling people to chase their dreams and follow their hearts, if I don’t live by that I’m not being honest with myself.

I'm leaving knowing that I have signed a ‘lifetime agreement’ with the Eels, so if I return to the NRL, it will be to Parramatta.

I'm grateful to all of you for the support you've shown me at this club, thank you.

Jarryd Hayne

Wow..... Massive news

Does this mean Watmough and Stewart become a package deal?
And that's the end of that chapter.

There's bugger all chance this is going to work out for him. Running style is all wrong, plus actually knowing how to play the game would take years. People who have been playing NFL their how lives that move to different teams often struggle with a simple change of concept.

I would be amazed if this pans out well for him.

Bit harsh.

I don't begrudge him. He could potentially earn a lot more and play in a comp not run by idiots.

NSW are so, so, so screwed next year. It's probably worth putting the house on Qld now.

There's a multi million $ contract waiting for him in league or union if it doesn't pan out./

I didnt realise he was given a conditional release, rather than just walked out like Sonny Bill.

Kick/Punt returner would be his best spot I reckon. Get him some space to run around in and could be pretty great.

Doesn't really require the knowledge and experience of the other positions. Then after a season or two could work him into the offensive side a bit. Just trying to make sense of it.

He'll need to contribute in other ways if he wants to see a roster, either as a gunner or coverage unit in other ST units
Which is no easy feat

Absolutely. NRL will fill his/the eels coffers for sure on this one.

Apparently he doesn't even have a contract and will have to trial to get a shot. :hmmm

I would not be surprised if Hayne was back in league just as quick as Benji.

Good luck to him. As has been pointed out, there's some positions that doesnt require that much more knowledge of the game - Hayne's got enough athleticism to have a fair dig at it. Punt return would be one position he can easily take up (as to how he'll rack up compared to other punt returns in the NFL is another question).

He's lucky to be in a position where the NRL would be stupid not to take him back if it doesnt pan out for him - I dont think there would be a shortage of clubs wanting to sign him if he does come back. If it does work out, potential pay packet would be better than NRL

Pretty sure they're a month or so into their season. I think Hayne was saying he's going over there to train and try to get trials for the next season, not the current one - doubt their rosters would be set for next season yet

They are, but if he's deemed good enough, a team can always cut someone and add him to their roster.

I wonder if he'll link up with a team/training programe and try and get a special invite to the combine and apply for the draft

I would think this season is out and all.his efforts will go into training for next season.

Effectively that will rule out any return in 2015 to league unless he gets homesick for Brisbane or totally hates it

If he's training for the NFL, he wont be in a position cardio wise for RL
NFL is an explosive game, the athletes are trained for explosion and power at the expense of cardio

Supposedly he has a lifetime deal with Parra so could only return to them. What's the bet in 6months to a year he returns and Parra get a special deal from the NRL to break the cap ala the Surgess thing to re-sign him.
