Ban mooted on clubs signing under-age players

The NRL is considering a revolutionary overhaul of its contracting system that would ban clubs from signing players until they turn 18 and significantly increase the minimum age at which players can be recruited by agents trying to stockpile talent.

The proposal, which has been pieced together by NRL head of strategy Shane Richardson and outlined during meetings with clubs in recent weeks, has been designed to stop clubs spending outlandish amounts of money on unproven teenagers.

That would just allow clubs to throw stupid $$ at 18 year olds that come through the system of other clubs... It doesn't solve a damn thing other than making it free reign for big spenders

This proposal won't hurt the Rorters, they don't sign youngsters.

It wont make much difference to the Roosters as they already pick the eyes out of the best 18 year olds.

I don't understand how it would work for country and NZ kids we bring into our SG Ball and Harold Matts sides. I assume some sort of allowance would need to be in place to cover the out of pocket and temp relocation costs for the kids and familys? Or more likely the NRL wont even consider it and the big winners will be the Broncos again if no one can bring a junior out of SE queensland until they are 18.

Absolute madness. That Shane Richardson has a lot to answer for, over a very long time.

I'd say this is part of the whole central development strategy designed to help clubs with strong corporate ties.

You'd think the ARU are big supporters of this.

 Im tipping he probably has thought long and hard about that.
Clearly Richardson is working on something that is going to completely change to course of RL in the country. The only info we've got is what they want us to have right now, doesnt mean there isnt A LOT more to this than has been released

And what, perchance, leads you to such faith in the NRL? Richardson does what's in the interests of the Sydney establishment. It won't be good for us.

I didnt say i had any faith in them to get it right, nor did i say what ever they have planned will be good, bad or indifferent for our club. Im just pointing out only a **** idiot would honestly believe that Shane Richardson has been given the task of overhauling the code, with changes already slated for U20's and NRL and he hasnt thought about how player development is going to be handled.

You know my stance on stuff like this, the sooner this code can move to a model that resembles that of the NFL, and club's become franchises worrying only about their NRL team, with the governing body handling the rest, the better AFAIC

It's not at all clear to me that our model should be what the NFL and AFL does. Not at all clear. This is because I don't trust the NRL to organise a chook raffle. If it were to happen, I don't expect it to be better, and I certainly don't expect it to be better for us. The Raiders however know quite well how to handle junior development in this region.

You have tunnel vision, as most "fans" do, the only changes your interested in seeing are changes that will benefit your club.

Shane Richardson isnt charged with the task of trying to come up with a system that is better for the Canberra Raiders, he's charged with the task of trying to come up with a system that is better for Rugby League in Australia.

The two of you are working on entirely different agenda's.

Actually, I don't think that's the case. Richardson does what benefits the Sydney establishment. He has priors. They do what is in the interests of Sydney clubs.
