Mounties killed themselves, Lachlan Croker's kicking and pass selection was poor

His defence looked quite solid but his game management/kicking and ball-playing was not up to scratch. Killed 3 or 4 overlaps playing short to Sorensen with santo and Dakuwaqa unmarked

For those asking, Baptiste looked good when he was on. However, he had a big head clash and had to go off, and stayed off. Jordan Turner went off about a minute later, again for a head clash.

Turner did not show a lot when he was on.

Mounties had their chances to at least force a draw in the final stages, but took the wrong options.

Newcastle Knights stun Canberra Raiders affiliate Mounties in upset win

A Trent Hodkinson-led Newcastle Knights have posted one of the upsets of the NSW Intrust Super Premiership season with a thrilling 24-18 win over the highly-rated Mounties at Cessnock Sports Ground this afternoon.

In a high-quality contest played at a cracking pace, the first half produced very few stoppages – the first penalty was not blown until the 21st minute and the first scrum was packed in the 28th minute – as both sides felt each other out in the early exchanges.

Newcastle Knights 24 (N Meaney, J Stockwell, T Hughes, T Hodkinson tries; T Hodkinson 4 goals) def. Mounties RLFC 18 (B Naden, S Duggan, R M Dakuwaqa tries; J Turner 2, S Duggan goals)

Nice to see Taylor named and Turner / Baptiste stringing some games together. Hopefully the big unit can get through this one injury free.

ISP NSW Team Of The Week | Round 10

2 – Eddie Aiono
Club: Mounties; 2017 TOTW selections: 0.

17 total runs, 191 total metres, four tackle-breaks, one offload.
Aiono’s willingness in attack was clear to see at Cessnock Sports Ground, who was second only to fellow winger Kato Ottio in the most runs for his team. The classy outside back was unable to cross for a try, but looked threatening throughout his 80 minutes. Aiono’s 92 post-contact metres were the most of Round 11.

12 – Scott Sorensen
Club: Mounties; 2017 TOTW selections: 1.

11 total runs, 131 total metres, one try-assist, two tackle-breaks, 38 tackles.
Sorensen followed up his match-winning Round 9 performance against the Bulldogs with another big game against the Knights – but it wasn’t quite enough to get his side across the line this time. After two try-assists in his last start, he got another at Cessnock Sports Ground and still made 38 tackles.

2017 Rd 11 Mounties V Wests Tigers preview

Mounties V Wests Tigers
Saturday May 20 2017, 3:00pm, Aubrey Keech Reserve
Radio: Listen on line at http://www.steelesports.com.au from 2:30pm

The Canberra Raiders NSW Premiership affiliate Mounties return home in Round 11 to Aubrey Keech Reserve for a meeting with the Wests Tigers - after suffering a 24-18 loss at Cessnock to the Newcastle Knights last Saturday.

It was something of an upset - but the Knights had Trent Hodkinson at the helm and, despite being dropped from the Newcastle NRL team, he's still a quality halfback.

Mounties started the match slowly, but produced two tries in the space of four minutes to Brent Naden and Sam Duggan just prior to half time - forcing a 12-12 score line at the break. The Knights went out to a 24-12 lead mid way through the second half - and despite coming home strongly, the Mounties couldn't fully bridge the gap.

Newcastle dominated possession (55 per cent possession share) on the back of an 84 per cent completion rate, while Mounties missed 50 tackles. All things considered, it was a probably a closer result than it should have been.

The Raiders' Fijian union sevens recruit Masivesi Dakuwaqa had his first hit out - and came up with some good runs and a try in his 25 minutes on field. Kurt Baptiste made his return from injury - a ruptured Achilles - and looked busy until a head clash forced him out of the match. Jordan Turner also suffered a head knock and failed an HIA.

Eddie Aiono (191 metres from 17 runs) and Kato Ottio (188 metres from 18 runs) were metre eaters on the Mounties wings, while Scott Sorensen (131 metres from 11 runs, 38 tackles and a try assist) was the strongest of the forwards.

The loss leaves Mounties in third place on the competition ladder, but the Wyong Kangaroos and Warriors look to be a clear step ahead of the Mt Pritchard outfit in 2017. They'll be looking to improve this week. They're on a WDLWL form line.

The Mounties' opponents this week, the Wests Tigers, are in 11th place, with just three wins to their name this season. The Tigers lost 24-12 to the Bulldogs in their last start. Mounties will need to watch for centre Esan Marsters and second rower Kyle Lovett who made plenty of metres with the ball in hand in that match - while Matthew Eisenhuth gets through lots of defence, making 58 tackles last week. Former Raiders junior Michael Chee Kam is also part of the Tigers line up.

The big problem for the Wests Tigers, however, is defence. They have conceded an average of 29 points per match in the first 10 rounds, while scoring 17. Mounties' defensive record is better, though not really good enough - conceding an average of 20 points per match. And they are least scoring more points than they concede (22 points per match). Mounties defeated the Wests Tigers in Round 6 this year, 30-22, at Leichhardt Oval.

Dave Taylor may make a long awaited return from a calf injury in this game. He's been named at lock, while Kurt Baptiste has been named at starting hooker, forcing Glen Buttriss to the bench. Masivese Dakuwaqa has been named as 18th man.

Our tip: Mounties to be too strong for the Tigers.

Didn't know they showed highlights of NSW cup on the Footy Show. Ottio got caught out badly for the try that Hodgkinson got.

Hearing Jordan Turner will play in jersey 22, as he doesn't fit the No. 6 jersey on Steele Sports. Dave Taylor is not playing for Mounties. Full team:

That's what we needed, Santo made nice break and from the next play croker gives a nice short ball to Naden who finishes the job and scores a nice try.
