Logan junior Jordan Mago will travel to Canberra to play with the Canberra Raiders

Image

THE Brisbane Broncos may have introduced an academy in Logan but players from the city continue to head south to Canberra in droves to play for the Raiders.

Exciting back rower Jordan Mago is the latest signing by the Raiders with the Marsden State High School student set to make the trip south mid-November.

"I'm really keen to head down and start with the club," Mago said.

"Not many people get this kind of chance and I'm really lucky. It's my dream to play in the NRL and it's an honour to be with the Raiders."

Sounds like some sort of tropical fruit salad.

There are certainly some interesting family connections in those squads. I dare say no other team covers nearly as much territory in putting their junior rep teams together.

Is this Canberra's most talented sporting family?

Meet Team Keir, Ashley, Lauren and Daniel, Canberra's teen siblings aspiring to take on the world of professional sport.

Daniel Keir, 15, has switched from the Australian Rugby Union's talented development program to join the Canberra Raiders under 16s Harold Matthews squad.

And if you're wondering where the trio's sporting genes came from, dad Steve Keir was a prop in the 1980s for the Raiders, Eastern Suburbs Roosters and North Sydney Bears, while mum Dianne was an ACT hockey and squash representative.

Daniel captained the ACT Under 15s team at this year's national rugby league championships, and played up an age group at the Under 16 Australian rugby union tournament.

Young juniors out to join Raiders

Almost 300 tried out, 260 were culled and then there were Young’s Jake Walker, Casey Wall and Connor Brebner.

This trio was among the 40 lucky and talented junior rugby league players selected for Under 16s and Under 18s “train-on” squads with the Canberra Raiders.

From here, a series of trial matches over the next month and a half will determine their fate with the club when the final squads of 22 players are appointed.

The boys started training on November 6, travelling to Canberra three times a week.

The final 22 players in both the Under 16s and 18s sides, once decided in December, will play other NRL junior squads over nine weeks.

Seven graduating Marsden State High School students have signed with NRL clubs

HAS Logan City over taken the Darling Downs and North Queensland as the state's premier rugby league breeding ground?

Seven graduating students from Marsden State High School will follow in the footsteps of past students Cameron Smith, Israel Folau, Chris Sandow, Antonio Winterstein, Joe Tomane, Tautau Mogo and Ricky Leutele to sign with NRL clubs and forge a career in the sport.

Jordan Mago and Jordan Aiono-Fatu will join the Canberra Raiders.

"We have a longstanding relationship with the Canberra Raiders who have been recruiting from Logan for a number of years and are getting the benefits of the Josh Papaliis and Anthony Milfords.

Brisbane Broncos align with Marsden State High

THE Brisbane Broncos have made its first move to sure up the talent rich Logan area by aligning with booming rugby league school Marsden State High School.

Marsden State High, which has produced the likes of Cameron Smith, Israel Folau and Chris Sandow, has become the first school in Logan to officially align with the NRL club as the development of the Logan Broncos Junior Academy begins.

Broncos coach Anthony Griffin joined the club's football operations manager Andrew Gee and recruitment officer Brian Edwards at a meeting with the school on Monday, November 18, to discuss the partnership.

"They (Marsden) have a track record of uncovering successful players and I guess the size of the school coupled with Logan being such a talent rich area has enabled them to produce kids of that quality consistently," Griffin said.

Grenfell junior league player makes Raiders "train-on" squad

Almost 300 tried out, 260 were culled and then there were Jake Walker, Casey Wall and Connor Brebner.

This trio were among the 40 lucky and talented junior rugby league players selected for Under 16s and Under 18s “train-on” squads with the Canberra Raiders.

They were chosen from approximately 150 players from country NSW and another 100-150 Canberra representatives during trials two months ago in the ACT.

Hennessy Catholic College student Casey Wall and Young High School student Jake Walker, both 15, have been selected for the Canberra Raiders Harold Matthews Train-on squad (Under 16s), while 16-year-old Connor Brebner will compete in the SG Ball squad (U18s).

Region’s best young talent look to step up

RUGBY league’s ambitious young talent were aiming to make a name for themselves at the junior trials for the Canberra Raiders representative under 16s and 18s sides on Saturday.

The region’s best youngsters took on junior squads from Illawarra in front of spectators and watchful eyes of the Raider’s junior coaching staff at the Goulburn Workers Arena.

It was the second week of trials after the teams took on the Western Suburbs juniors last weekend.

Raider under 18s team manager Tony Bellingham explained the aim for the day was to “play the structure we want them to play.” However he admitted the under 18s squad wasn’t where they were hoping they would be.

“We’re probably better then last week but it’s still a long way from where we wanted them to be,” Bellingham said.
