Harold Matthew’s Raiders bow out against South Sydney

The Canberra Raiders Harold Matthews Cup season (under 16’s) has come to an end, after losing their semi-final by 26-12 against South Sydney on Saturday afternoon.

“We really pushed a very good team all the way. The boys turned up with a great attitude and we can’t doubt their effort to compete,” coach Adam Kyle said. “But at stages in the game and same as last week against Newcastle we just lacked some finish to our sets and some composure with the footy.

“Unfortunately for our boys we had a few dropped balls at the big points in the game. But full credit to them we kept having a crack right down to the last play of the game. It’s a great learning environment for the squad and staff and I’m sure we have all taken something from the past 2 weeks especially.”

Cotric selected for NSW Under 16s

Promising prospect Nic Cotric has been rewarded for his outstanding season for the Raiders in the Harold Matthews competition with selection in the New South Wales Under 16’s side set to face Queensland prior to Game 1 of the Holden Cup State of Origin series at Lang Park next Wednesday.

Cotric’s selection not only portrays his exciting natural ability but highlights the tremendous work done by the Raiders junior development staff in nurturing his prodigious talent.

In his first season in the Harold Matthews in 2013, Cotric gained selection at fullback in the Australian Merit side.

Fast forward 12 months and in his second season in Harold Matthews, Cotric was a standout for the Raiders this year scoring 12 tries in 11 games and leading the side all the way to the semi-finals.

Canberra Raiders junior selected in NSW under-16 team

Canberra Raiders junior Nick Cotric has been selected in a NSW under-16 team to face Queensland in a curtain-raiser to the State of Origin series opener at Lang Park in Brisbane on May 28.

The 15-year-old has been chosen on the wing and is the lone Raiders representative in the Blues side, which will be co-coached by former NSW players Dean Young and Ben Hornby.

Standing 185 centimetres and weighing 95 kilograms, Cotric's preferred position is at fullback. He has come through the ranks with the Valley Dragons. He was a standout for the Raiders in the Harold Matthews Cup (under-16) this year and set himself a goal of making the NSW under-16 side.

Erindale’s big win kick starts season

Canberra school Erindale College kept their hopes of moving into the knock out stages of the GIO Schoolboy Cup alive with a big 42-0 win over Hunter Sports High School on Friday afternoon at Canberra Stadium in Canberra.

The match served as an undercard for the National Rugby League match that was to be played later that night between the Canberra Raiders and Canterbury Bulldogs. This gave the High School boys the fantastic opportunity to play at a professional stadium, for some players this was the first time they were able to do this.

Erindale’s Captain Kalani Going took home $100 as the GIO Most Trusted Player in a great performance leading his side.

Erindale next head to Sydney to face Westfield Sports High School in what promises to be a cracking match that will see the winner advance to the knock out stages of the GIO Schoolboys Cup Competition.

Country 16s selection the latest in a long list of representative honours for Bastick

ORANGE CYMS forward Jack Bastick is excited for his opportunity to represent the NSW Country under 16s team that will play in Rockhampton next month.

“I had a pretty good defensive game, I controlled the ruck well. I also worked hard in attack to get a quick play the ball to help my team get a bit of a roll on,” he said.

The Canberra Raiders have shown interest in Bastick as they invited him to participate in their country training program this year.

“I was involved in the country camp, they get all the country boys into the Raiders camp and we trained and had a hit out against their SG ball side,” he explained.

Canberra teenager out to create history as unique dual international

He is a teenage, 100-kilogram behemoth who already powerlifts more than his body weight and wants to become the first person to play NRL and compete at the Olympics in judo.

And Raiders Harold Matthews prop Sam Dobb is using Roosters youngster Willis Meehan as inspiration that he can excel at the elite level in two sports.

His West Belconnen under-16 coach Adam Peters, who played 46 games for the Raiders and Manly, has no doubt he will enjoy success on the big stage.

Yes I realise that but Keebra park don't have a track record of getting rid of kids who simply misbehave. He has some pretty serious behaviour issues....good player though so it is all okay.

That's not what the story is saying though, is it? It's saying he's had to address them before being able to convince the Raiders he was worthy of a contract.

This doesn't deserve its own thread, but interesting that Mahe Fonua played in the Raiders Harold Matthews team: http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/leag ... 0gjwr.html

I don't remember him being at the Raiders.
