Medal win a new chapter for Souths Logan prop Luke Page

LUKE Page has joined the likes of Greg Inglis and Daly Cherry-Evans as a winner of the prestigious The Courier-Mail Medal for the best and fairest player in the Intrust Super Cup.

Page was awarded the competition’s highest honour at the QRL’s annual awards dinner in Brisbane’s City Hall on Wednesday night.

Page was close to debuting for Souths Logan’s affiliate club the Canberra Raiders this season but the NRL’s second tier cap stopped him.

He will spend the entire pre-season with Canberra’s top squad and is likely to debut for the club next year.

Luke Page wins Queensland Cup Best and Fairest Medal

VIDEO: Luke Page interview

Luke Page was tonight recognised as the Intrust Super Cup’s best and fairest player after receiving the Courier-Mail Medal at the QRL’s Gala Awards dinner. See the QRL TV interview.

The emerging representative forward tallied 29 points, collecting the maximum three points in the final round to edge out Norths Devils playmaker Todd Murphy (26).

PNG skipper Israel Eliab (24), Ipswich captain Keiron Lander (21), Mackay hooker Anthony Mitchell (19) and Northern Pride’s Manly bound back-rower Blake Leary (19) were the other leading contenders.

Page commenced the Intrust Super Cup season with the Burleigh Bears, but went on to don the black and white of Souths Logan after signing mid-season with the Magpies’ NRL affiliate Canberra.

The award caps a breakthrough season for Page, who represented the Queensland Residents at Lang Park in July.

The Courier-Mail Medal is judged by the referees who allocate votes on a 3-2-1 basis after each Intrust Super Cup match.

Recent recipients of the prestigious award include Daly Cherry-Evans (2010, Sunshine Coast), Javarn White (2011, Norths), Luke Capewell (2012, Redcliffe) and Cody Walker (2013, Easts).

* The XXXX People’s Choice Award was won by Papua New Guinea Hunters enforcer Willie Minoga.

Minoga was a clear-cut favourite amongst fans, receiving nearly 40 percent of the total votes. Peter Gubb (Wynnum Manly Seagulls) and Davin Crampton (Northern Pride) polled strongly as well.

Minoga’s teammate Garry Lo was the Rookie of the Year for his sizzling efforts on the wing.

Wynnum Manly’s Jon Buchanan was the Coach of the Year, while the Pride’s Blake Leary received the Representative Player of the Year.

Great news on PAGE. Love to see him get an NRL shot next year.

Also like the Raiders to consider trying out Garry Lo from PNG. Very exciting player. Probably on the radar of a few clubs now.

Well,well,well....PAGE was my smokey for the gong and to his credit and hard nose playing style has been rewarded with a prestigious award. I still see that in the forum, members view of the 2015 possibilities still are excluding PAGE in the plans for STICKY next year. As I have said, this kid is something special that is looking for a club and coach to show faith in him. I was fortunate to watch most of his games for SLM and this kid should have been given a go late in this season (2nd tier dramas aside). I rate this kid extremely highly and we as RAIDERS fans should be stoked wee have him.
Now will the forum members include him in their plans for 2015. Probably not..as they have no idea what this kid could provide for us. Big Mistake,,,, Well done PAGEY the SLM would have you anyday, as would a growing number of marquee clubs...

If Tilse didn't finish the year well I would've had PAGE as my 4th prop, now he's 5th and gets a game when there are injuries, rep call ups or Tilse goes back to old form. If he does get a shot I can see him making it very hard to drop him.

Its true we dont see him and can only go off reports from yourself and a few others.

The top four probably to start the year are Boyd , Tilse , Shillo and Vaughan. But PAGE wouldnt be far off next in line after that and considering he was looked at getting a NRL debut this year , its almost a sure thing.

While the boys have been in Mexico partying hard, I have heard from a very reliable source that PAGE has been training hard in preparation for the Pre-season. I hope the other fronties have not over-indulged, as if they have they may find themselves in NSW cuyp and PAGE may very well lock up a position for the future.

By golly I think PAGE might reap the benefits of having a full off season under his belt.

If that happens he might be PAGE by April!
