Brothers in the same kennel

THIS time last year Joe Picker was rubbing shoulders with rugby league legends Greg Inglis and Sam Burgess as he prepared to take on another gruelling year in the NRL.

Fast forward 12 months and the 27-year-old is preparing for country football with his two younger brothers.

It may seem like a world away, but if you ask Joe where he’d rather be, he’ll tell you he wouldn’t have it any other way.

Picker is the latest recruit for the Workers Bulldogs, joining brothers Michael and Ben at the kennel after retiring from the NRL at the end of last season.

Very sad and shortsighted decision from some clubs. They need to support an essentially bush club

Yass Magpies to spend another year in the George Tooke Shield

Magpies captain-coach Brad Wylie said his charges are satisfied with playing in the George Tooke Shield for a third consecutive season.

A lack of numbers meant Yass was forced to withdraw from the Canberra Raiders Cup last week.

"We just didn't have enough players to field three sides," Wylie told the Tribune on Monday.

"In the Raiders Cup you need a first grade side, a reserve grade side plus an under-18s otherwise you can't compete, and we just didn't have that much interest at training."

Canberra rugby league applauds NRL's tough stance on referee abuse

Canberra District Rugby League referees boss Chris Nightingale says the NRL's tough stance on dissent was crucial to send a stern message as bush football struggles to attract and retain young referees. While Nightingale pointed out referee abuse wasn't the only reason for the issue, he admitted some have quit after being verbally attacked on the field.

James Woolford not lost to the game!
Gina Riley: Oh, come on, John. That’s a bit old hat, the corrupt IOC delegate.
John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.

Injuries no concern for Bulldogs ahead of round one

INJURIES forced the Bulldogs to cancel a trial against Wagga two weeks ago, but there should be no reason for concern come tomorrow, opening game says veteran Mick Dodson.

The Bulldogs are without Joe Picker, who smashed his eye socket and fractured his cheek bone in the clash against the West Belconnen Warriors in March.

Team regulars Blake Hewitt and Cody Medway also were casualties from the match with bruised ribs, but both are expected to return in the side.

Defending premiers the Queanbeyan Blues have begun their title defence in strong fashion with a comprehensive 34-12 victory over the Gungahlin Bulls at home.

Lightning quick outside back, and former Raiders Under 20’s player, Jake Wheeler, starred for the Blues with a hat-trick of tries.

The Bulls, who are coached by former Raiders stalwarts Lincoln Withers and Troy Thompson, showed plenty of spirit in the encounter but were ultimately outclassed by the Blues.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 2 Preview

One of the difficulties of being the defending premiers is that every team in the competition lifts their intensity when they clash with you.

And that is the case the Queanbeyan Blues are faced with in 2015, something experienced forward Aaron McInness is well aware of.

“Every side is improving and we’ve got to try and stay ahead of that,” McInness said. “We’ve got a big assignment ahead of ourselves to try and go back-to-back and with that comes a lot of hard work because every team is out to get you and really rises for the occasion.”

Luckily, the Blues have retained a strong nucleus of last year’s premiership winning team.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos (7) v Belconnen United Scholars (6) on Saturday at 3:00pm at Freebody Oval
Gungahlin Bulls (8) v West Belconnen Warriors (2) on Saturday at 3:00pm at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval
Goulburn Workers Bulldogs (3) v Tuggeranong Bushrangers (5) on Saturday at 3:00pm at Workers Arena
Woden Valley Rams (4) v Queanbeyan Blues (1) on Sunday at 3:00pm at Phillip District Oval

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 2 Wrap Up

The Woden Rams have conceded their first loss of the season to the Queanbeyan Blues, going down 24-10 in wet and overcast conditions at Phillip Oval Sunday afternoon.

“Our attacking execution let us down at times, we had some opportunities on their line and couldn’t execute. It was a high quality game in tough conditions, we just let ourselves down in key moments with a couple of decisions that we made and the Blues really made us pay for those,” Woden coach Ash Barnes said.

“We really showed up and really competed with a high quality side, probably the best side in the competition and pushed them for 80 minutes. I’m happy with our effort.”

Queanbeyan Blues 24 (Craig Wilkinson, James Woolford, Tom Leddy, Tom Ruediger tries; Wilkinson 4 goals) def. Woden Valley Rams 10 (Kahi Harawira, John White tries; Tim Crome 1 goal)

Goulburn Workers Bulldogs 38 (Chris Hart 2, Codie Medway, Ben Marmont, Matt Worboys, Brad Hewitt, Ben Picker tries; Picker 5 goals) def. Tuggeranong Bushrangers 0

Gungahlin Bulls 21 (Chris James 2, Sean Grainger, Aidan Greenwood tries; Greenwood 2 goals, Chris Thorley field goal) def. West Belconnen Warriors 8 (Ryley Thomas, Dayne Ewings tries)

Queanbeyan Kangaroos 38 (Isi Afemui, Glenn Baker, Dale Turner, Ben Shulver, Troy Whiley, Adam Pearce, Daniel Maskill tries; Jack Miller 5 goals) def. Belconnen United Scholars 28
