Canberra Raiders Cup: Grand Final Preview

In a replay of the 2014 decider, the Queanbeyan Blues and the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs will again meet in the TTM Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final on Sunday afternoon at Seiffert Oval.

Queanbeyan will be looking to go back-to-back to send former Raiders forward Trevor Thurling out a winner in his final match for his junior club.

“It’s been great to have had the chance to finish my career with the Blues, I’ve met a lot of new faces and the club has been really welcoming for me to go back there and have the chance to play,” Thurling said.

“I’ve been lucky enough to have been involved in three minor premierships and the premiership last year and I’d love to add another one to the list before I finish up at the end of the season.

Simon Woolford suspension stayed, allowed to coach in Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final

The Canberra Region Rugby League (CRRL) has granted a stay of proceedings in the case of Simon Woolford and his previously advised suspension of nine months imposed, after a discipline hearing last Wednesday evening into the smashing of the glass window of the coaches box at Seiffert Oval.

Due to a number procedural and technical issues raised by the legal counsel for Simon Woolford, the CRRL, after consultation, has agreed to reschedule the hearing to a later date.

The granting of the stay of proceedings will allow Simon Woolford to recommence his normal role and duties as Head Coach with the Queanbeyan Blues before this Sunday’s Grand Final against the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs.

The CRRL is committed to ensuring that the highest standards of behaviour and discipline are met within the competition and is confident that all clubs would support these measures.

The CRRL will be making no further comment on the issue at present.

Simon Woolford free to coach in Canberra Raiders Cup final

Simon Woolford is free to coach the Queanbeyan Blues in Sunday's Canberra Raiders Cup grand final against the Goulburn Bulldogs.

Blues management announced on Thursday it would be appealing a nine-month suspension handed down to Woolford for allegedly smashing a window in the coaching box during last week's preliminary final win against West Belconnen.

But after discussions with Blues' lawyers and consideration of relevant information the Canberra Region Rugby League granted a stay of proceedings until the appeal is heard.

What a great shame that the Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final is being played in direct opposition to the Canberra Raiders Holden Cup and NRL matches in Sydney on pay TV.

Not only that, the Raiders feeder team Mounties, have their game shifted off pay TV on Saturday... to an untelevised game on Saturday at Belmore Oval.

Did anyone see the opportunity to shift the Canberra Raiders Cup grand finals to Saturday... and bring the NSW Cup Wk1 finals to Seiffert as a double header?

What a great attraction it would have been, Seiffert on Saturday, a NSW Cup finals match and the Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final.

Lost opportunity.

Pickers prove there's more to life than football

Just south of the tiny town of Bigga is a rustic shearing shed where Joe Picker would rather be than playing on the NRL's big stage.

"It's just home for a start, you're your own boss and we're a very tight family," Joe Picker said of his reasoning behind quitting the NRL for the farm.

"I don't know how far you'd have to go to find another shed where everyone working there is in the same family. I'm very close with my brothers and it helped being able to come back and play footy with them."

Sunday: Queanbeyan Blues v Goulburn Bulldogs at Seiffert Oval, Queanbeyan, 3pm.

Former Canberra Raider Trevor Thurling to retire after local grand final

Queanbeyan Blues forward Trevor Thurling will retire from the game content he's squeezed every bit of potential out of himself after Sunday's grand final against Goulburn at Seiffert Oval.

The 31-year-old is set to hang up the boots regardless of the result, as will Blues Ben Nicholl and likely Marc Herbert.

Goulburn stalwart Michael Dodson and fellow forward Shane McCallum are also preparing for their swansongs.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Joe Picker heroics fail to drag gutted Goulburn Bulldogs to premiership

He'd dislocated his wrist with just minutes remaining in extra-time, but Goulburn back-rower Joe Picker refused to succumb to the pain. His arm hanging limply by his side, Picker's decision to play on showed how badly the Bulldogs wanted to atone for last year's grand final loss to Queanbeyan Blues, also in extra-time.

However, Goulburn tasted the worst kind of deja vu after the 24-14 Canberra Raiders Cup grand final defeat at Seiffert Oval on Sunday.

Queanbeyan Blues break Goulburn hearts in extra-time in Canberra Raiders Cup grand final

Preparing for extra-time in their 24-14 grand final win, Queanbeyan Blues skipper Marc Herbert joked with Goulburn opposite Mick Picker they shouldn't have bothered with the first 80 minutes.

For the third straight year the Blues played added minutes in a decider, and for the second year in a row it was they who celebrated, and Goulburn who were left gutted.

QUEANBEYAN BLUES 24 (Jake Wheeler 2, Tom Ruediger, Craig Wilkinson tries; Wilkinson 4 goals) bt GOULBURN WORKERS BULLDOGS 14 Codie Medway, Ben Marmont, Matt Worboys tries; Ben Picker goal) in extra-time at Seiffert Oval on Sunday.

Queanbeyan Blues go back to back

Queanbeyan Blues have won their second consecutive TTM Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final, with a thrilling extra time 24-14 win over the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs at Seiffert Oval.

Locked at 14-14 at the end of fulltime the Blues proved too strong for the Bulldogs in the extra period, scoring two tries to seal the win and back to back titles.

It was the third straight season the Grand Final was decided by extra time and sadly for Goulburn, the second time in as many years that they haven’t been able to score the extra points to lift the trophy.
