Shaun Johnson 'clone' Howie Brown leads West Belconnen to semi-final win

The real life version may be injured but West Belconnen's "Shaun Johnson clone" Howie Brown could be the ace in its premiership pack after he led them to a 26-14 minor semi win over Queanbeyan Kangaroos on Saturday.

Minor semi final: West Belconnen 26 (Howie Brown, Dayne Ewings, Johnny Faletagoa'i, Mike Uluakiola, Taniela Moa tries; Brown 3 goals) beat Queanbeyan Kangaroos 14 (Bryan Cronan, Sekope Meke, Adam Pearce tries; Jack Miller goal) at Seiffert Oval on Saturday.

Canberra Raiders Cup: West Belconnen Warriors overcome Queanbeyan Kangaroos in minor semi final

A spirited second half effort from the West Belconnen Warriors has seen them overcome the Queanbeyan Kangaroos 26-14 at Seiffert Oval in the Minor Semi-Final of the TTM Canberra Raiders Cup.

Warriors Coach Justin Giteau put his side's shaky start to the match down to pure excitement and nerves heading into the big match.

“I put it down to the players being too pumped up and that really did show early with the mistakes that we made and letting them take an early lead from those mistakes,” he said.

“However at half-time we pin-pointed a few areas that we needed to work on and we took advantage of the mistakes they made in the second half.”

Canberra Raiders Cup: Major Semi-Final Preview

Queanbeyan Blues v Goulburn Workers Bulldogs on Sunday at 3:00pm at Seiffert Oval

It’s only fitting that a Grand Final re-match between the Queanbeyan Blues and the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs at the same venue as the 2014 decider will bear the fruits of another Grand Final appearance for whichever team comes out on top after 80 hard fought minutes this Sunday.

“It will be a high quality affair and both sides are close to full strength as well which is good for this time of the year,” said experienced Blues forward Aaron McInness, a member of last year’s premiership winning side.

“We lost a couple of games during the season but we’ve overcome that with back-to-back wins over Tuggeranong and Belconnen United and we’re heading into the Major Semi-Final with confidence.

Ben Nicoll ready for another premiership tilt after early injury return

Queanbeyan Blues five-eighth Ben Nicoll thought injury would restrict his involvement in their Canberra Raiders Cup title defence to running the water for his teammates. Nicoll will continue his incredible comeback from a torn achilles injury when the Blues take on the Goulburn Bulldogs in the major semi-final at Seiffert Oval on Sunday.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Goulburn Bulldogs first through to grand final

An outstanding second half comeback has seen the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs secure a spot in the TTM Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final for the second successive year after they defeated the defending premiers the Queanbeyan Blues by 10 points at Seiffert Oval.

“We were starved of possession, I think they had 25 sets to our 15 or 16,” Blues Coach Simon Woolford said.

“We didn't need to do anything out of the ordinary, we were up 12 points with the wind and running downhill in the second half, so we did the hard work in the first half.

“But one error, they scored off the back of that and the heads went down and we didn't recover from that. It was really disappointing.”

In one of the closest ever finishes in the competitions history, Queanbeyan Kangaroos star Jack Miller has won the Les McIntyre Medal for the best and fairest player in the 2015 TTM Canberra Raiders Cup.

Miller narrowly edged away from a six way tie in the final round of the competition, when he picked up three votes for a man of the match performance against the Woden Valley Rams.

After round 13 of the competition Miller was joined by Dwayne Connors (Gungahlin Bulls), Marc Herbert (Queanbeyan Blues), Brad Martin (Woden Valley Rams) and Ryan McQueen on 10 votes, with Ben Picker then picking up three votes to take him to 10 votes in the final round and a six way tie for the lead.

Miller’s performance against the Warriors proved the difference, as his three votes took him to 13 making him the outright winner of the annual award voted on by referees each match of each week.

The Gunghalin Bulls Nathan Corby won his second straight Leedon Shield for the best and fairest player in reserve grade, while Bayley Graham (West Belconnen)won the David Sharpe Award for the best and fairest player in the first division of the under 18’s competition.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Preliminary Final

This Sunday at Seiffert Oval will see West Belconnen’s fairy-tale run cross paths with the might of the Queanbeyan Blues who will be aiming to secure back-to-back Grand Final appearances after taking out the title in 2014.

Situated at sixth position on the TTM Canberra Raiders Cup in Round 8 the Warriors then embarked on a seven match winning streak to now sit just one game away from the club’s first Grand Final appearance since 2009, where they went down to Goulburn 29-24.

The ultimate goal of course will be premiership honours which has not occurred since 2007 when West Belconnen defeated the Tuggeranong Bushrangers 24-10.

West Belconnen Warriors' Mike Uluakiola proves his doctors wrong

Lying in an Auckland hospital with a broken neck, a 13-year-old Mike Uluakiola was told he'd never play football again. He was the victim of a vicious assault where street thugs "popped him in the head" with a hammer in a robbery gone wrong.

Soliola sorry for Pommy bashing

He's one of the NRL's most feared hitmen but off the field, you'd struggle to find a nicer bloke than Canberra Raiders forward Sia Soliola. That was demonstrated at this week's Les McIntyre Medal presentation night, where the Canberra Raiders Cup player of the year was crowned. Interviewed on stage before the award was announced, Soliola spoke about his time at St Helens and joked people in England "speak English, but you can't understand a word they say". Soliola was then told one of the award's finalists, Queanbeyan Kangaroos halfback Jack Miller, was in fact English. Miller went on to win the award but not before Soliola went out of his way to apologise for his unintended quip.

"You can't give me that much space, I guess." It was a tongue-in-cheek remark from Tom Ruediger, but West Belconnen found out the hard way it's true after the Queanbeyan Blues right centre tore them apart in Sunday's 26-20 preliminary final win at Seiffert Oval.

MATCH REPORT: Canberra Raiders Cup Preliminary Final

For the second year in a row, the Queanbeyan Blues will again face the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs in the TTM Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final after overcoming a strong finishing the West Belconnen Warriors 26-20 at Seiffert Oval on Sunday.

After finishing the year as Minor Premiers, the Blues lost the Major Semi-Final to the Bulldogs last weekend, whilst the Warriors defeated the Queanbeyan Kangaroos a fortnight ago in the Minor Semi-Final.

Despite coming home with gusto, it was the relatively slow start from the Warriors that cost them a place in the finals, as it took 20 minutes of the game for them to really get into the game. During this time the Blues moved out to a 22-0 lead before the Warriors registered 16 unanswered points of their own to get back into the game after the half-time break.

QUEANBEYAN BLUES 26 (Ruediger 2, Stevens, Wheeler, Misios tries; Wilkinson 3/5 goals) defeated WEST BELCONNEN WARRIORS 20 (Lomax 2, McQueen, Moa tries; Brown 2/4 goals)
