THE introduction of an NRL shot clock next season will take its most significant step with two matches set to trial the technology this weekend.

Time limits will be placed on scrums and dropouts during the under-20s Holden Cup competition between Cronulla and the Wests Tigers on Saturday and Gold Coast and Canberra on Sunday.

NYC Match Preview: Raiders v Titans

The Canberra Raiders Holden Cup side is sitting precariously at 6th position heading into the last three rounds of the season but if the team can move on from a tough couple of weeks a finals berth is waiting for the young Green Machine, and if they do, coach Mick Mantelli believes they can go deep into the finals this year.

“It’s been a long season for the boys, we have a lot of young kids that are just learning to play at this level so we are working on their defensive principles and technique,” Mantelli said. “We just need to keep working.

“I think we’re a pretty good chance at winning the last three games and when it comes to the Panthers we just need to compete against them.

“We just need to get into a grind with them, which is probably something most teams haven’t done so far this season. We should get into a tussle with them and see how good we are.”

Shot clock to be trialed in Canberra Raiders Holden Cup clash

The Queensland heat always takes some adapting to for the Canberra Raiders, and their under-20s team may find it even tougher given the NRL will trial its shot clock during Sunday's clash with Gold Coast. The teams will have 35 seconds to pack a scrum and 30 seconds to kick dropouts as the NRL test drives the rules changes it will introduce next year in order to reduce time-wasting and create more player fatigue.

4th min TRY TITANS to Greg Lelesiuao in the corner. The Titans virtually had a three man overlap. No conversion from the sideline.

12th min TRY TITANS to Tyrone Roberts-Davis. Again a big overlap available to the Titans, but this time on the other side of the field. Shaun Hudson converts from the sideline.

20th min Tevita Pangai Jnr makes a big break, but throws a forward pass, and it's dropped in any case.

22nd min TRY TITANS to Shaun Hudson, off the back of a penalty. Tevita Pangai Jnr the offender. The defence is terrible out wide for Canberra. It's virtually non existent.

They have had less than 40% of the ball and kick on the 1st tackle. 20m restart and 7 tackles they Titans score at other end.

Coach killer right there..

27th min TRY TITANS to Tyrone Roberts-Davis. It's easy. Unfortunately this is in no way an even contest, the young Raiders team is no match for the Titans. Shaun Hudson converts from out wide, hits the post and goes over.

The issue is the team is now virtually an under 18s squad.

Don't seem to be taken chances with the ball like raiders usually do, can't grind out a win 22 points down.. Raiders come out in 2nd half and have some fun.. Raiders win 30 to 28

30th min Raiders successful in a captain's challenge, the Titans player is ruled to go over the sideline, not the Raiders. Raiders scrum near half way.
