Whether Ricky Stuart is a great coach or not is irrelevant. IMO its pretty clear our clubs issues lie far far far far deeper then the coaching ranks.

What exactly are you talking about?

We have clearly improved in our recruitment. Where else should the club be looking to improve if not within the coaching ranks?

Yeah, spot on, GeM. IMO we should be playing finals football this season (and our attacking stats prove we've got the roster to do it), and the only reason we're not comes largely down to coaching, and mainly defence. We haven't even had a bad run with injuries, possibly the best run of any team in the comp!!

Hopefully we get our coaching/defence sorted our next year, because Crawley has our attack purring like a cat.

No one ever said his recruit was bad (well, Ok I did originally but that was back when he had re-signed Tilse and McCrone and just managed to miss out on three big signatures and had a player backflip on him so it wasn't a good time), the man can obviously scout and and find talent. The problem is he can't do anything once he gets it here and eventually that talent is just wasted in the meteoricy of everything else he does...

Worst things the team has done this year:

Defence (General)
Bench utilisation
Defence (Sliding)
Team selections
Defence (Speed)
Kicking early for no **** reason
Defence (Numbering up)
Mental midgets, inability to shut down anyone but the Titans and we then turned that around a few weeks later and lost to them.
Defence (One more for the road)

Things we have done well:

Recruitment
Attack, except when we get in front then we go into this stupid "lets defend this lead instead of doing what we are doing well" mode...
Fitness
Physio

There are a few in the middle we haven't really done well or failed at but that's a quick list off the top of my head at least.
Get Stuart to realise he is holding the club back and step down to player manager!

Hi Ultima, can I add some:

Defence (not locking the ball up in tackles despite 3 defenders being involved)
Defence (waltzing with the opposition and allowing them further meters than they deserved)
Defence (staggered line on kick returns)
Defence (free passage down our flanks - outside backs jamming in with poor results time and again. Deja Vu tries)
Defence (not looking to drive the ball carrier backwards early in EVERY set)
Offloads to no one
Slow starts either to begin the game or immediately after half time.

I agree with your positive outcomes and would add - we didn't have the off field incidents which have plagued the last 7 years. We can be proud of the off field performance this year.

This ***** me no end . Ive commentated on it earlier in the season.

We rarely dead stop a player ( Jackie Boi did ).

Prime example when the Titans player reversed for about 15m with players hanging on him.

Good additions, and I thought I was being a bit mean breaking down the individual pieces of defence :)

Another two I thought of that were particularly bad this year:

Inability to change our game plan when it was obviously not working for us... Examples being kicking early and just not stopping regardless of how ineffective it was, or running forwards at the same non-existent hole we obviously picked up on in regards to video reviews but they had since corrected.
TERRIBLE wrestle. I hate wrestling, but it's part of the current game and as we aren't going to change that why are we so damn bad at it? That's in attack and defence... It's so bad that even when we do have more possession than other clubs we still have less "sets of six" with the ball as we spend half of it on our backs while they get play the balls instantly as we just can't contain them with-out giving up a penalty :(

And another good one so people don't call me "too negative":

Media coverage improvement - While it's still a farce compared with what other clubs get, we actually got a fair bit of a good press with-out an equal or great share of the bad so good work there (although maybe it's just we didn't have a cruiser gate style incident and I've set the bar too low).
Get Stuart to realise he is holding the club back and step down to player manager!

Its a deliberate tactic, it allows you to hold up the play the ball until the ref calls held and stops a player diving on his stomach so he plays the ball on the way up.

If done correctly you gain a second or two and can put the player down on his back facing the wrong way.

Problem with our defence is that the legs tackler arrives way too late.

Two go high, but the opposition player keeps his legs pumping. Then eventually someone arrives to take the legs and it all goes pear shaped on the ground, all because we cannot effectively put opponents on the ground. They land in such a way they get to their feet quickly, Ptb fast and our markers are shot, and our line in panic mode.

Dean Pay has to improve this, or be replaced.

Maybe but we fail 9 out of 10 times

They gain ground and a quick plsy the ball

yeh again the idea is that the third tackler arrives simultaneously to the ref calling held, getting there early defeats the purpose of holding him up.

We have improved from a very very low base. And that is due to the coach which this thread is just essentially hanging.

But imo our board and CEO are the biggest numpties in sports administration. The culture change they have presided over from the early 90s until now is nothing short of astonishing. Almost magnificent in its failure. IMO we get Wayne Bennett here and we would be doing well to have a 2 **** years and 1 GF qualifier that he got out of newcastle.

Dont get me wrong the coach has a big effect on how the teams plays, strategy and personnel, but there is a lot more then that that a coach doesnt control.

The broncos dont wrestle much and they are right up there.

IMO wrestling is costing more penalties then its worth.

But if you hit a guy hard enough you will get him on his back and force a slow ptb. not to mention take a bit of juice out of him, outside of papalii and wighton we don't do this (soliola hit pretty good to but hes injured and edwards has been released).

For everyone who thinks our attack is awesome and our defence is shocking can I just say that they have both increased at the same rate from last year. Our defence is 80 odd points better than last year and so is our attack. Considering personnel changes from last year to this year and from rd1 to now our defence really has improved. I would say with a full off season and players playing in their position we should see similar defensive increases next year if not greater.

Effectively allowing the player with the ball to continue moving. We just don't implement it effectively.

But we measure the attack and defence by what other teams do. The best teams have a big gap between the two. Objectively, the Raiders do have great attack, they are a top four team in attack. They are a bottom four team in defence. The defence needs to improve by a LOT more to match top teams, even top eight teams.

I agree that our defence needs a lot of improvement but I think most reasonable people would agree with me that if there was another team with a starting winger who hadn't played professionally for 5 years, another winger playing his first full season, a centre in waqa who had only ever played wing, a 6 who had only played a handful of games in the position, a fullback in his first full season in the position and the Cornish Williams experiment, tilse being the starting prop for half of the season, despite all of that the team scored a try and saved a try each and every game this season from where they were last season which I think is a success.

In saying the above I will add one caveat, all of this is based on the fact that Ricky had to tear apart a bog average team and start again not with seasoned campaigners but for the most part rookies in their positions and I don't envy that situation at all. I would think next year with a stable 1-17 we might actually get to see what Ricky, Crawley and dean pay can actually do and I think many people may be susprised. What most people won't remember is all the work that was put in this year to get the defence right that you don't see on TV.

On the other hand we get worse next year and sack Ricky :hi

Well I'm often criticised on this forum for being too much of a Ricky Stuart supporter. But we certainly cannot call 2015 a success.

The worst EVER home record. That's worse than a park footy team in 1982. I'll repeat that... worse than what was essentially a park footy team in 1982.

I personally don't say any season is a success if the team doesn't win the premiership. Barely avoiding the wooden spoon is not a successful season. Missing the top eight is not a successful season. Sorry, just cannot agree that what's happened is a "success". Progress maybe.

I know Ricky Stuart has said that the team's football has progressed further than he expected. It's not a high benchmark in this case. I think making the eight would have been good progress.

Suffice to say, i think GE has absolutely nailed it.

Stuart has proven he can build a squad, 2016 is the time to prove he can still coach one too.
