Bulldogs eye flyer

Canberra flyer Brenko Lee asked for a release to join Canterbury before the June 30 deadline but the Raiders denied his request.

The Bulldogs are still keen on signing the 19-year-old, however Canberra boss Don Furner said Lee will see out the final year of his deal in 2016.

Fair enough really. Brenko is a talented kid who potentially has a good FG career ahead of him. To achieve that, he is best served by being somewhere where he is more likely to get FG time.

He is only 19. What happened to the days of actually earning your spot in 1st grade? These bloody Gen Y kids and their TwitFace want to be the boss first day out of Kindy.

He was not near ready for first grade this year. I think the club is doing the right thing not playing him too early just because he wants it.

If he he keeps playing well and has a strong off season he is as good a chance here as the Dogs.

He's a centre, that's his position. Right now he's got:

24 year old captain of the club and a guy who likely retires with every meaningful club record in his pocket
23 year old new recruit whom has nearly as much potential as Brenko, has already proven himself to some significant degree at NRL level and the club is trying to extend.

Edrick Lee, Jack Wighton are staples of the side, Rapana, Hawkins and Waqa are currently ahead of him on the pecking order based on the selections.
Why wouldnt he want out? Where's his FG chance going to come?
The List - K.Love, Keno, Zippy's tennis angels, LA Lakers, Noah, Boozer, Lucy's horse tips, Colts, Lucy, Kevin Proctor, Dr Zaius, TR....

He is one injury from a chance. If he hits his potential they will find a spot, but he has to work for it.

Who would he have replaced at the Dogs? Not Lafai and not Morris. He would've played wing there for Perrett next year anyway.

HE IS 19!!! A whole lot could change within the club in 1 or 2 years. BJ could check out and not get a new contract. Waqa could well take that job playing Union. Hawkins has been given a few shots and Ricky seems pretty happy to use another option if it is there.

Would be silly to let him go.

From what I can see from the outside it was attitude that was holding him back , a common problem with young blokes.

It is worth holding onto him

19 is the new 22 in the NRL.
Especially as an outside back. If you've not cracked the NRL by 20-21, you're in a bit of trouble

Professionalism happened. His career is best served chasing a FG spot. For any talented 19 yo kid to progress, FG time is important. If he is getting the vibe that isn't likely here, moving makes total sense.

His chances here come down to injury in the centres. He is behind Hawkins, Rapana, Lee and Waqa for a wing spot. If another club can offer him a more likely chance, that would and should be appealing to him. It would come down to other considerations as well, ie how much he feels valued by the coach, how much the coach from another club appears to value him.

I don't think expecting kids to just "hang around" until their time comes is realistic in the current era with the salary cap etc etc etc. Use it or lose it.

Dogs have Chase Stanley and Jacob Loko as depth. Do you really think he will just rock up to the Bulldogs and walk into a starting spot over Morris or Lafai?

He's got the talent. He's still young but if he works hard he'll get his chance next year. Wouldn't surprise me at all to see a Lee/Croker/Leilua/Lee backline at some stage in 2016. And of course we mustn't forget Leilua isn't actually even contracted here next year at this stage. Who knows what could happen.

Rona was actually getting FG game time at the Cowboys before making the move though?

Hmm just checked.. played 7 games for Cowboys last year (upto July), all before signing with the Dogs (August)

As for brenko, I'm assuming here that Stuart has him playing mounties because he may get a chance again this year... Not really sure why other than that especially if he wants to leave

I wouldn't be surprised if the signing and selecting of BJ has anything to do with it...

He's young, he's ambitious... Talent is not in question, but maturity and attitude is in question...Ahh well...Can't keep them all.. at least he cant leave till end of next year...

There was word that he was well along in discussions with another club, too.

Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.

Des Hasler wants him, he would slot straight into their wing over Thompson, almost immediately playing first grade

Sitting in the shadows behind Lee and Rapana, whilst the club actively sings more outside backs (BEEJay), is only delaying his potential

He is going to be a great player - let him go if you wont pick him.

Only because they're all full on outside backs... if not, I'm sure we'll start seeing articles about Brenko being homesick...

Signing Leilua & losing Brenko would be stupidity personified.

With Justin Hodges retiring at the end of the year, don't be surprised if the Broncos come calling.

One of the reasons Wayne Bennett has lasted as long as he has is because he knows A-level talent when he sees it.

Brenko should have been given a shot at right centre before Leilua got here.

Some of those outside backs have not developed as well as they hoped. Bennett has not given them the same grace as Hook did. Copley, Maranta and Reed could easily be replaced. Hodges is retiring and Vidot has been told to look elsewhere.

If we entertained releasing every player outside the top side who got offered first grade elsehwere we would end up with a squad of 17 (+Mcrone and Butters).

There's also Kahu.. and Oates who's supposed to be a backrower but has been playing wing (and doing a pretty decent job of it so far).. That's a fair few names already without even going into who they have in the u20's or in the ones that's in their QLD cup that haven't had a shot yet.

Slightly off topic - just had a look at the Bronco's player profiles... i didnt realise Waddell followed Bennett to the Broncos...

Well, we did relaase Billy T............................

But at least Don's come out to say they're not letting Brenko go until his contract ends (which is end of next year).. There's still a chance he sticks around if he gets FG game time (if he deserves game time)

Brenko Lee will turn out to be a high quality first grade centre for someone.

I hope it's us.

Seeing him smash through opposition defensive lines a few years from now (or even next year) wearing a Broncos jersey (or any other jersey for that matter that isn't lime green) will be sickening.

You cannot let talent like that slip through your fingers and expect to be taken seriously as a football club.

He could be a very good centre for us but we have put a substantial road block in his way by naming Croker captain
