What do you say after a performance like that? In Round 24 it was a 28-12 loss to the Gold Coast Titans. The Raiders put in their worst performance of the season, losing to the team running last, that had a 66 per cent completion rate and made 13 errors in the match. The Raiders statistics were just even worse. It was a dreadful game, and a consistently poor performance from virtually the whole team, Jarrod Croker excluded. After being in the hunt for the finals up until the loss to the Sea Eagles... the Raiders are genuinely now in a fight to avoid the wooden spoon.

2015 Round 24 Canberra Raiders V Gold Coast Titans

In Round 25, the Raiders take on the Penrith Panthers. Brenko Lee comes into the centres for Canberra for the suspended Joey Leilua. Leilua has taken an early plea on a shoulder charge charge, and he will miss the final two rounds of the season. It's his second suspension for a shoulder charge in the space of a few weeks.

The Panthers' Elijah Taylor has been ruled out for the season with a hand injury. Isaah Yeo shifts to lock and Waqa Blake returning in the centres. Apisai Koroisau will start at five-eighth and James Segeyaro at hooker. Sika Manu goes back to the bench and Tyrone Peachey starts in the back row.

Late changes: None expected at this stage for the Raiders.

History: Canberra has won 33 of 67 clashes against the Penrith Panthers, and drawing one. In the last 10 matches, it is five apiece. Canberra won 34-24 at Penrith Stadium just weeks ago in Round 20 at Penrith Stadium. It was unfortunately two losses in 2014.

2015 Round 20 Canberra Raiders V Penrith Panthers

2014 Round 5 Canberra Raiders V Penrith Panthers

2014 Round 10 Canberra Raiders V Penrith Panthers

Canberra has a good record at Canberra Stadium against the Panthers, winning 16 of 24 matches. Here's one of those home wins at Canberra Stadium, Week 1 of the finals in 2000. Sit back and enjoy...

2000 Week 1 Finals Canberra Raiders V Penrith Panthers

Form: The Raiders are on a WLLLL form line in their last five appearances. In fact, the last match the Raiders won was against the Panthers. The Panthers have a LLLWL record. The Panthers lost 19-12 to the Dragons in their last start. Their only win in the last five games has been against a Shaun Johnson-less Warriors.

Betting: The Raiders are $1.55 favourites in the match; the Panthers are paying $2.45. The Panthers have 4.5 points start.

Our tip: The Raiders have now dropped to 12th on the ladder (8-14, -12); the Panthers are essentially level in 13th (8-14, -80). The Raiders have the worst home record in the league (2-9) and now cannot avoid having the worst home record in the history of the club... even the inaugural 1982 team won four home games. On the other side of the ledger, the Panthers have the worst away record in the league (2-9).

Coach Ricky Stuart said "We didn't have a lot to play for today" after the loss to the Titans. Well actually, the Raiders did. At the very least, they had their pride in club and jumper to play for. I can't really excuse that sort of performance, as the coach did, though I understand the frustration with the refereeing this season, and the pickle he was in. Let's hope we see a change in attitude this week.

The other worrying thing is: it's a milestone game. It's the final home game for David Shillington in green... and there will be other players in the squad being farewelled also. The Raiders almost never win milestone games.

Regretfully, Panthers by six. Hopefully, I'm completely wrong!

What they're saying:

Ricky Stuart on the loss to the Titans: "We had our season stolen from us last week and it's been a very tough week, very hard to get the players back into a bit of intensity at training. If I ever excuse a loss I'd excuse that one today, but that's it. I can't remember too many performances this year as consistently poor as that today. If there was eight or 12 efforts like that this year, I wouldn't excuse it. I don't expect it over the next two games, and that's why I can excuse that effort today. There wasn't much to play for today, but we have to make better choices going into next week."

Jack Wighton: "We'll come in strong this weekend, we were very disappointed with the way we went up to Gold Coast and performed. I can't pinpoint why we played so bad, we didn't turn up. It's not good enough but this year's been a lot more positive for us and the fans."

Get it over with already!!
Gina Riley: Oh, come on, John. That’s a bit old hat, the corrupt IOC delegate.
John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.

Bring it on, worst attacking team in the league (Penrith), how many points will we still let them score!
Get Stuart to realise he is holding the club back and step down to player manager!

Could be:
A) Its a fight to avoid the spoon
B) Our home record is rubbish (and that's being nice)
C) We are playing a side we should beat
D) Its likely going to be cold at the ground tonight
E) We are probably favourites with the bookies
F) All the above
G) All the above and anything I've missed

Agreed. I would love to win this just to not get the spoon, although I have a horrible sinking feeling about this.

It seems every result recently has gone against us in this regard, it's almost unbelievable

I remember Gus Gould doing a piece on Shane Webcke, He showed him in SOO and Club games which were at the start and end of the matches. He also showed how the team was going, some winning some losing. It didn't matter to Webcke, he gave the same high quality effort EVERY match. That's what I want from the Raiders. Have a red hot crack at this match Raiders and come away with the win.

I always want the Raiders to win Nickman, regardless of circumstances. I'll be watching the match on TV tonight and want to see my green team beat Penrith. I also want to see the positive attitude of earlier in the season. I won't ever give up on the Raiders before a game is played.

Considering the Storm one was after the salary cap debarkle, the Sharks one was after the ASADA debarkle and the Knights one was after Johns got injured for the season, then yeah, it's possibly a completely BS stat!
