MATCH REPORT: Raiders sign off in style at Canberra Stadium

Press conference: http://www.raiders.com.au/news/2015/08/ ... e_rai.html

For the last home game of 2015 the Canberra Raiders have come away with one of their best home performances of the season, downing the Penrith Panthers 34-18 in front of 6,717 at Canberra Stadium on Monday night.

A near perfect first half performance, scoring 22 points to six set up the dominant victory from the Green Machine.

Sam Williams had the ball on a string, controlling the tempo of the game with his kicking, whilst his partner in crime Blake Austin and Jack Wighton at the back provided spark up the middle of the Panthers forward pack.

Despite having a poor home season record in 2015 it was the perfect send off for club stalwart David Shillington who is leaving the Raiders at the end of the season.

VIDEO: Jamie Soward hospitalised but Jack Wighton goes unpunished after massive collision

Image

Image

JAMIE Soward was knocked out by one of the biggest ‘legal’ tackles in the NRL this season. But should Jack Wighton get off scot-free?

Soward had to be stretchered off in a neck brace and was taken to hospital for precautionary tests after he was levelled by a massive hit from the muscular Raiders fullback.

The Panthers’ veteran playmaker was blindsided by Wighton, who came full throttle at Soward in broken field after the Panthers had carved out an opportunity with a linebreak.

Fox Sports video called: "Sickening hit KO's Soward". The poll so far says it's a legal tackle.

@FOXNRL Why is Greg Alexander allowed to commentate on #Canberra #Raiders games? He has a clear conflict of interest.

Ridiculous tweet. Why make our fan base look like a bunch of sooks? Brandy was fine tonight.

@theghraiders: @FOXNRL Perhaps the question should be, why is he commentating on Panthers games. He has a clear conflict of interest.

@tommyhud9: @TheGHRaiders @FOXNRL Daley used to commentate on canberra games?

@theghraiders: @tommyhud9 @FOXNRL If you have a current position with a team, you should not commentate on that club's games.

@tommyhud9: @TheGHRaiders @FOXNRL if they can still be objective during the call I don't really mind

@theghraiders: @tommyhud9 @FOXNRL It's not really possible, it's actually standard business practice to remove such conflicts.

So while I personally think his comments are constantly biased towards the Panthers and against the Canberra Raiders in any match they play against Penrith, I don't blame him. He just shouldn't be calling the Panthers' games. He's on the Panthers' board of directors. It's not possible for him to avoid. In fact, I'd probably say he should represent his club's interests. He just shouldn't do it as a commentator on a Panthers' match.

Absolutely nailed it. Penrith were horrendous in that game. I felt sorry for their coach.

The highlights for the Raiders would look amazing, but their general gameplay highlighted how much they are missing a top quality halfback. They looked completely rudderless out there.

Austin needs to stop shirt grabbing in defence too. I'm not sure how many missed tackles were officially recorded against him, but it must have been at least half a dozen.

Didn't they do this crap for Papa last time we played Penrith? Also I like the publics double standard ps of how they were saying the Ben Barba on Ben Creagh tackle should've gone unpenalised but this one 40% of people saying it's illegal.

Here's the thing, at impact, Soward's knees are bent and Wighton has bent almost in half at the waist. There is no malice intended in the tackle. I believe 1st contact is with the top of Soward's pec/ collar bone/ shoulder. After the impact, Soward's head rocks forward into Wighton's shoulder. So, technically Wighton makes contact with the head, BUT, its 2ndary contact and its Soward's head hitting Wighton's shoulder rather than the other way around. The video ref had a seriously long look at the incident before giving a ruling. For the NRL to overturn it in a review would be pretty hilarious, and yet not surprising. I believe the correct call was made, even if I didn't expect that to be the decision; I fully expected the "he has made contact with the head, its on report, penalty is here".

Interesting to hear that the roosters complete the least amount of sets. Yet they're close to minor premiers.

Thoughts on that, stat lovers?

I await with baited breath the breakdown of stats across the entire season. Perhaps an average per game, season best and worst and against which teams.

Thanks in advance.

BTW I agree with your conclusion on the Wighton tackle.

The idea that the line of causality between good completions and being good has always been a bit suspect though. As we demonstrated this season when we adopted the kick on the second tackle, complete sets, give the opposition 70% of the ball strategy...

Possession is more important than completions. Being good defensively and scoring tries more import than both. As the roosters have demonstrated, if you are good defensively, giving away penalties (in order to have a set line) and completions are not the be all and end all. If you arent completing sets because you are trying things and as a result score more tries than you would have playing consrtvatively, thats a solid strategy... There is more than one way to skin a cat, teams dont have to play boring conservative percentage football...
