Not really. I like his work ethic but he is still a kid and needs to spend at least 2/3rds of a season playing reserve grade before I would even consider him for anything other than a utility forward spot on the bench.

Sticky should put his faith in TPJ and if he needs to, move Fensom into the prop position and put Soliola into lock.

This looks a safer move than Bateman.
Even Soliola or Barnett is a better option than Bateman.

I'm actually happy with bateman moving to the front row for a few reasons, one because he's young and can still adjust, and two that means it frees up a back row bench spot for Barnett or tpj

Agree Bateman is young and can still adjust, but he should be doing it at mounties. How many 20 year old forwards do you see come into first grade that are ACTUALLY ready, besides a few exceptions that have a high percentage of islander in their DNA? He has been totally ineffective when Ricky has put him on the field. The commentators mentioned his name when he made a run on Monday, and that was honestly the first time I'd even noticed he was on the field this season! Compare that with Barnetts first game... He was a superstar after 5 minutes. I don't get what Ricky sees in Bateman, and I hope we don't waste too much time next year realizing he needs more time in lower levels.

GE hates our local juniors :(

I dunno about the hype but he's been a staple in the junior QLD rep teams, including playing U20s when he was 17-18? He must have some talent

It's so strange to see act like this regarding a young player. The one thing ill say for you is that you are normally fairly reasonable when it comes to what to expect out of rookies. Im not sure what Bateman's done to earn your ire.

He's barely had any time in FG to show case his abilities. As i said, he's been a staple of the rep teams as a kid, to the point where he was playing U20's SOO when he was 18. The guy's obviously got some talent.

I think the move to the front row is good, He's a good lateral mover, he's got a huge motor. He's short but if he put on a bit more weight and keeps his leg speed, i think he could be an Aiden Tolman style front rower for us in the future.

I can't see what he brings to the table however in the limited time he has had I have not noticed him which is not a bad thing. He has a better opportunity at the Raiders as a Prop then he does a 2nd rower.

Granted i only saw one of them but he looked the part in that one SOO game i watched.
As for his 20's form, i disagree, i think he's been consistantly one of the best forwards in our 20's team. Not a flashy big play type, just super consistant and always playing a good level, Paul Vaughan wasnt a game breaking star at 20's and he's turned out alright.

Bateman may turn out to be a good FGer, or he may not. I certainly dont think you can stamp a 20 year old middle forwards papers after around 60 minutes of FG footy. Better judges than you or i have seen fit to give him higher honours as a junior and feel he's got the talent to succeed at the next level.
We'll see, but i certainly dont think Stuart is wrong to give the kid his shots. Especially if he's moving to the front row, given how our depth is looking there next season.

TPJ and Barnett are great young footballers and i'd certainly not complain about either of them getting the time in FG. I have no idea why Barnett was dropped and even less of an idea why the coach hasnt seen fit to give TPJ so much as a sniff of FG. But i dont conflate those three individual player development issues into the one. I dont think Stuart is necessarily picking Bateman over those guys, i think he's picking Kennedy over them. I think they play a different position and role than Bateman, who is a middle third player. Bateman and TPJ are to me edge players and in this 17, i suspect Vaughan is our "edge" option on the bench, not Bateman. But we'll see.

You been taking lessons from Nick in rudeness?

I was definitely sad to see James Woolford depart the club, and he did show a lot of potential at junior level. He left for the Storm at junior level and played with the Storm's U20s premiership winning team. He didn't come through as a first grade player, but James Woolford was also making junior rep teams. The reason I thought it was sad at the time that he left the Raiders was because we hadn't had the opportunity to even try to transition him to firsts.

Matt Frawley departing? Didn't worry me: http://www.thegh.com.au/forum/viewtopic ... 5#p1161515

So those "in the know" rate Bateman. Fine. They also rated Matt Allwood two years ago. I didn't. Everyone has an opinion. It'll often be wrong. It might also often be right. I was going on about Jarrod Croker, Anthony Milford, all sorts of players before you'd even heard of them.

 Tbf i dont think ANYONE rated Allwood outside of the coach. His FG career is one of the strangest things ive ever seen in my life.

But if you're such a stud scout, why are you wasting your time here? The roosters will pay you a ton to point them to the pots of gold at the end of the rainbow... As you said, everyone has an opinion, sometimes you're right, sometimes you're wrong just like the rest of us mortals

Mick Mantelli has been one of the best in the league as far as scouts go, ill give him the BOTD on these matters ;-)

I hesitate to use the term, but I think Stuart certainly rates Barnett and TPJ. I rate them well in front of Bateman for potential. TPJ is very young so not surprised he's not getting time. Barnett, I really like, but he'll have to have controlled, not uncontrolled, aggression. Clearly Stuart is seeing Bateman as a potential prop. Maybe one day. Not next year is my guess.

I think Vaughan showed a lot more at junior level than Bateman BTW.

They should start him in the front row this weekend. Giving him 10 minutes is a waste of time.

I'm also not sure why TPJ is stuck back in the 20's. It seems like a lesson in humility more than football.
