Blake Austin re-signs until end of 2018

The Canberra Raiders have received a huge boost ahead of their final home match of the 2015 season, with Blake Austin re-signing with the club until the end of the 2018 season.

Austin has had a remarkable first season for the Green Machine, reinvigorating his NRL career and finding a home in the number six jersey for the Raiders.

His brilliant form in the first season of his contract has allowed his current contract to be upgraded and extended until the end of 2018 and he will look to continue to develop his game in the coming seasons in Canberra.

Austin said the new contract will allow him to better prepare for the next season, knowing his and his families future is secure in an environment he loves living and working in.

“It’s great to have it done leading into the last two games of the season and the pre-season. We’re all really excited about what’s going on here at the Raiders and to be a part of it for the next three years is going to be awesome,” Austin said. “There’s a great group of boys here which has made the transition feel really seamless and my partner loves Canberra too so it made it a really easy decision for me.”

Austin said he’d like other players in the club follow his lead and re-sign for the long term and said the team wanted to be successful in the future.

“We’ve been talking and a few of us want to put pen to paper and stay together for a long time,” he said. “It’s no secret what we’ve got building here. We’re in the thick of it and see good things happening and we want to be a part of it.”

His relationship with Coach Ricky Stuart was another reason for Austin’s commitment to the club and said he looked forward to continue working with him over the course of his new deal.

“Ricky and I have gotten on really well. I’ve had a couple of clubs now and this is the first time I’ve had a really positive relationship with the coach and he’s definitely someone I want to work with in the next few years and part of the reason while I have decided to re-sign,” he said.

Raiders CEO Don Furner said the club were thrilled to have Austin remain with the club for another three seasons and said he was a big part of the clubs future success.

“Blake took a risk coming down to Canberra and it has paid off for both parties. He has shown a commitment to this Club and we are very happy to return that commitment with an upgraded and extended contract. In a very short space of time Blake has become one of our members favourite players and a player who people love to come and watch, “Furner said. “We are thrilled that Blake will be with the Raiders for another three seasons. His professionalism both on and off the field have been of a very high standard and we see him as a big part of the clubs future.

“We’re at a stage now where we have a really exciting core group of players signed on for at least two more seasons and we hope to increase that list over the coming weeks.”

Great news! Now lock in Hodgson. The future, in contrast to the last six weeks, is bright indeed.

Well deserved, he has been down the last few weeks but so has the team, was looking good today, again though the team was very up and down. Hopefully it's not a major injury and he is back round one next year.
Fine, don't sack Stuart!

Canberra Raiders lock up five-eighth Blake Austin until the end of 2018

Canberra Raiders five-eighth Blake Austin wants to spend the rest of his football career repaying the club for taking a punt on a "bench player struggling to find a spot". After signing a one-year upgraded contract extension until the end of 2018, Austin is hell-bent on thanking the Raiders for reviving his career, which was in limbo after he was shown the door by Wests Tigers.

so we really only have him for one more year then previously.

i hope he kills it in 2018 to make up for the extra moneys spent in 16 and 17.

It is such a nice change from the last few high profile players we've had. It was great seeing him go over and say hello and shake the hand of every member out on the field receiving jerseys after the presentations last night, even though he was only half dressed with his arm in a sling.

Raiders sign star five-eighth to a long-term deal and he immediately goes down injured.

unless a bloke is an out and out superstar you are better off signing/re-signing them when they are a bit off there game as opposed to when they are in the form of their life playing the best footy they have ever played.

The question is, is Blake Austin a superstar, we got that answer wrong with campo. IMO if the answer is wrong again, in future I will just continue assume (but with more force) that when a hard 50:50 type decision comes up we will make the wrong one.

The thing with Austin though is he is versatile. If things go awry we don't have to dump him to reserve grade he can be trialled at centre, hooker, bench, fullback or backrow. I'm not advocating that but if his form drops or the team isn't working he provides options.

Also just on the injury.... I can cop an injury or two. I'd way rather a player like Austin doing a shoulder than a knee.
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.

Am i the only person who thinks austins game is set to improve exceptionally next year? And that a partnership of he and sezer will continue to develop into one of the best in the game?

I doubt he is on superstar money, especially for the year of his extension when the cap will be huge.

Didn't really see this posted anywhere but figured here suits:

http://www.raiders.com.au/news/2015/09/ ... ready.html

Great to hear the injury doesn't concern him too much and how it won't impede a lot of his training before the season next year.

I also didn't even really think of how Blake and Sezer will be in rehab together now, could work out really well for them training together a lot closer than they may have been otherwise.

Isn't this just a one year extension to his original contract?

You make it sound like he signed for two more? He initially signed for 3 years, 15-16-17, and this is an extension to the end of 18, not sure what "another year" you're referring too?
