I don't think anyone else really expected it though Sid! I think Hodgson was clearly the man, Austin second... I wouldn't have put Soliola out that far in front, that he could not lose once he fractured the cheekbone. Well done to him, however.

Canberra Raiders Sia Soliola wins Meninga Medal

Canberra Raiders forward Sia Soliola has capped off a huge first year at the club, by winning the Meninga Medal for the Raiders best player in 2015.

Soliola missed the last five matches of the season through a cheekbone injury, but had polled enough votes (24) earlier in the season to hold out all contenders, finishing three points clear of Jack Wighton who polled 21 votes and Josh Hodgson who received 15.

The Meninga Medal is awarded annually to the NRL’s best player and is voted on by the players and football staff after each match on a 3-2-1 basis.

Soliola collected man of the match honours and three points in the voting in five matches this season, with Jack Wighton picking up three points on four occasions.

In other NRL honours, Wighton was awarded the NRL Coaches award, while Luke Bateman collected the rookie of the year for the clubs best new face in in 2015.

The Fred Daly Clubman of the year was awarded to Steve Babic for his contributions to the club both on and off the field, with the Geoff Caldwell Welfare & Education award given to Lachlan Lewis for his excellent results studying Engineering at the Australian National University.

The NYC Players player was awarded to Tevita Pangai Junior for an outstanding season in the NYC team, with the ultra-consistent Thomas Cronan receiving the NYC Coaches award.

Tre Williams rounded out the awards on the night, as he was named the Gordon McLucas trophy for the junior representative player of the year, following his selection in the Australian Schoolboys team.

Well, that was a little surprising, but it just goes to show that the players often appreciate different things to the fans.

Jack Wighton for the coaches award was an obvious choice. His development in that fullback role this season was fantastic. Stuart clearly rates him highly and will do anything to hold onto him.

Very surprising result
I won't say it's undeserved because he had an absolute cracker year, but he'd have been 4th on my ballot form

That's the difference between the fans and the players. They recognize the hard work he does on and off the field, and it speaks volumes for the mans leadership and integrity.

As fans we dont see the off field stuff, or training, so we cant really judge on that. However everything we heard out of camp was exactly that.

Very fair comment. We fans only see what happens in game, the players see what goes into the other 30 hours of their week

30 hours? **** me. I do more than 30 hours a DAY, and these guys think that's enough a week??

TBH i might have over cooked it. I remember reading a few years ago that a "working" week for an NRL player is 20 hours. That didnt include travel and game day

Congratulations to Sia. Top season and his team mates rate him very highly. He has 'Project BJ' as a priority next season.

I thought Blake Austin was key to our attack and has been the running player we have needed since Campo's knees cruelled him. His running took pressure off others around him and we looked no where near as potent when he was injured at the back end of the season. Jacks development at No 1 has been fabulous as well. He learned as the year went on and defensively he is a few rungs above any other player on the Raiders roster at FB imo.
